Why I Started the Running Mechanic
When you are in a groove in your training, an injury is the worst thing that can happen. Not only does this hurt you physically, but it is also a big hit mentally. In my 29 years of running, I cannot tell you how many times I have faced a physical roadblock in my training. My time as a competitive runner came to an end during my first year of college. I was a walk-on mid-distance runner for Indiana Wesleyan University when even walking became difficult, let alone running. Long story short, I developed compartment syndrome after running with shin splints for three straight years.
As a father of a young runner and coaching distance runners, I have watched too many runners struggle through late-season injuries that could have been prevented. Along these lines, the typical pattern is a runner gets injured, and he or she goes to a doctor whose treatment focuses specifically on the injury. The doctor will give instructions to rest, prescribe physical therapy, or worst case scenario, perform surgery, but what caused the injury still needs to be addressed. The next phase is to go to a physical therapist who focuses on mobilizing and strengthening the injured part of your body. In the majority of cases, the focus of the physical therapist is on strengthening the injured part of the body with no focus on what caused the injury. When the runner is released from the doctor and the physical therapist, the runner returns to his or her physical activity. In a high volume of cases, when the cause of the injury is not addressed, there is a high likelihood of re-injury. This is not an indictment on doctors or physical therapists because they are doing their job. I started the Running Mechanic to provide the next step in a runner’s recovery by focusing on the running mechanics, strength, and mobility. Incorporating proper running mechanics is crucial, as it can enhance performance and reduce the risk of injuries. I also started the Running Mechanic to help runners reach their full potential and help prevent future injuries.
The Running Mechanic works with runners of all ages and performance levels. Whether you are an elite runner or someone who has health and fitness goals, the Running Mechanic provides a holistic approach by focusing on the physical and mental aspects of human performance.
